Reported by the CT Video Services Film & TV Desk. Published February 4, 2026.
Ricky, created by Hartford natives Rashad Frett and Lin Que Ayoung and filmed across Connecticut, was set for a nationwide theatrical release after its Sundance recognition.
The independent feature follows a man returning to society after incarceration and draws on Frett’s Hartford experience. It was filmed in Hartford, East Hartford, Middletown, Bloomfield, and Cheshire.
Ricky’s path from a Connecticut-rooted creative team to a Sundance directing award and national release is exactly the kind of local-to-national production story the state’s film community should track.
The film’s current release and screening information should be confirmed with the distributor or theaters.
What this means for the people making media
News becomes useful when it connects back to action. A new production creates opportunities for local crews and vendors. A venue story can become a location or broadcast lead. A policy change can change a budget. A community story can become the next documentary, campaign, interview, or music video.
